Three exhibition games were played around the SJHL this evening.
In Melfort, Jesse Trach and Tanner Shalin combined for 25 saves and shared the shutout as the Mustangs defeated the OCN Blizzard (MJHL) 3-0. Clint Olson led the Mustangs attack with a goal and an assist. Mike Eagleton and Lee Papesong added singles. Assists also went to Harrison Tribble, Shay Neufeld, Taylor Watt, Selleck Bunn and Brandon Wilson.
In the battle of the North, the Flin Flon Bombers dumped the La Ronge Ice Wolves 5-1 in La Ronge. David Linsley, a former WHLer in Seattle, had a hat trick for the Bombers. Former Weyburn defenseman Jean-Sebastien Bergeron added a goal and an assist. Shawn McNulty also had a goal for the Bombers while single assists also went to Myles Masse, Harley Garrioch, Dominic Martel, Jordan Cherney and Dustyn Clegg. Riley Ross went the distance in goal for the Bombers turning aside 16 of the 17 shots he faced. Joel Belair with the assists to Jeff Ratt and Floyd Cook had the only goals for the Wolves. Dallas Ungarian allowed 4 goals on 20 shots in the first half of the game before giving way to Kyle Jarahaus who stopped 23 of the 24 shots he faced.
Elsewhere, the Dauphin Kings (MJHL) defeated the Yorkton Terriers 5-3 as the teams met for a second consecutive night. The Kings also won on Tuesday night. Jeff Steele had a goal and an assist for the Terriers. Cory Silverson and Chris Bratina added singles. Kyle Block chipped in with two assists while Russell Billett also added a helper. Mark Currie only faced 10 shots over two periods, stopping 8 of them. Colin Munroe stopped 5 of the 8 shots he faced in the third period for the Terriers.
Tomorrow afternoon the Weyburn Red Wings resume their preseason schedule as they travel to Wilcox to face the Humboldt Broncos at the Notre Dame tournament. Game time is 4:00. The Yorkton Terriers will face the Notre Dame Hounds in the evening game at the tournament. The other SJHL exhibition contest Thursday will feature the Kindersley Klippers hosting the Brooks Bandits (AJHL).
Around the SJHL .....
The Kindersley Klippers have added depth to there forward ranks by acquiring Jeremy Beller from Penticton (BCHL) for futures. Beller had 14 points in 60 games last season with the Vees. He is reunited with head coach Larry Wintoneak who coached him a couple of years back in the SIJHL.
In Yorkton, Terry Struthers has resigned as the voice of the Terriers. I got to know Terry a bit over the last couple of years while broadcasting and he is a stand up guy and I always enjoyed listening to his broadcasts when I had a chance. Good luck to Terry in the future and hope to see him around the rink this year.
Remember to pick up your FLY WITH THE WINGS LOTTERY TICKETS. It would be great to see the full $1000 per week for a year paid out this year. Tickets will be available game nights at the rink or you can stop by the Red Wing office or call any Red Wing director and they can set you up with tickets.
Great weekend ahead folks..... Banjo Bowl in Winnipeg, NFL season starts and lots of exciting SJHL preseason action. A sports fans dream. See ya at the rink.
