Red Wings Back In Win Column!


The Weyburn Red Wings got back on track on Saturday night as they dumped the Battlefords North Stars 5-2 in North Battleford. Josh Bray (pictured), named the games first star, had a goal and an assist for the Wings. Brayden Nargang was named the third star and he also picked up a goal and an assist. Preston Shupe also had a goal and an assist while Rhett Bly and Torrey Lindsay, with the eventual game winner also scored for the Wings. Stephen Simms added two assists while Luke Johnson also had a helper. Brayden Penner and Nick Kalnicki replied for the Stars. Both goaltenders were busy has the shots on goal were 41-40 in favor of Weyburn. AJ Whiffen had a stronger outing tonight as he stopped 38 shots. Adrien Lemay made 36 saves in the Stars net. Rookie Andrew Perrault, playing only his second SJHL game, got into a third period fight which was instigated by Stars veteran Barrett Penner. Nick Needham was ejected for a checking from behind penalty in the third period. The Red Wings improve to 6-4-0-1 with the victory and remain in sole possession of second place in the Sherwood Conference. The Stars record drops to 2-9-1-0 and they now trail fifth place La Ronge by 4 points.

In Melville, the Millionaires avenged a 3-0 loss in Yorkton on Friday, be returning the favor on home ice winning by that same score tonight. The two teams came out fighting as there were three fights in the first 29 seconds of play. Dion Campbell and Carter Smith started the proceedings just two seconds in as the two guys known more for their offensive abilities dropped the gloves. The Millionaires did all the scoring in the first period. Michael Jordan scored twice for Melville who also got a goal from Brad Johnston. Kyle Cantlon made 26 saves to pick up the shutout. Lynden Sammartino left the game early in the first period after giving up two of the Yorkton goals. He did not leave at a time where a goal was scored so not sure if an injury was involved or not. Sammartino allowed 2 goals on 7 shots faced. Mark Currie went the rest of the way for Yorkton allowing 1 goal in 26 shots. The Millionaires are now 8-1-0-0 and have a three point lead on second place Weyburn. The Terriers dropped to 3-4-1-2 with the loss.

It was another wild one between Melfort and Nipawin with the Mustangs getting the win this time, 5-4 in a shootout. Taylor Watt, who was originally expected to be out until Christmas time with an injury, played his second consecutive game and had two goals and an assist for Melfort. Rookie defenseman Tommy Brown picked up a goal and three assists for Melfort. Clint Olson had the other Mustangs goal. Gary Childerhose added two assists for Melfort while Mike Kirby had the shootout winner. Steve Mason scored twice for the Hawks. Dean Prpick and Kent Sauter also scored for Nipawin. Brent Ottmann added two assists. David Ritz was not real busy in the Stangs net as he only faced 21 shots, stopping 17 of them. Derek Kleinsteuber, who is getting all the work while Danny Gagne serves a suspension, made 35 saves in the loss for Nipawin. The Hawks pick up one point and are now 6-3-0-1. Melfort improves to 5-4-0-0 with the win.

There are two games tomorrow night, as the Wings are in Humboldt to face the Broncos and the Estevan Bruins host the Notre Dame Hounds. The Wings next home game is Friday October 12 when the Estevan Bruins are in town.

Weyburn is taking too many penalties. They need to stay out of the box and focus on capatalizing on their powerplays!!

On another note...Whiffen was exactly what he was advertised to me. Very calm and cool. Plays a simple and solid game.
