Wings Shutdown Klippers!

The Sherwood conference leaders clashed at the Weyburn Colosseum tonight and although some may say it was a boring defensive style of game, when the chips were down the Red Wings came away with the 3-0 shutout victory. Kyle Haines got the Wings on the board with his second of the season at the 8:35 mark of the first period. It was a power play marker for Haines with assists going to super rookie Rhett Bly and Preston Shupe. Bly would put the Wings up short-handed with 5:51 to go in the third with assists going to Shupe and Mick Pawlyshyn. Nick Needham capped things off with an empty netter with five seconds to play to seal the victory. Adam Feniak and Eric Calibaba assisted on Needham's goal. The trio of Bly, Shupe and Torrey Lindsay continues to cause havoc on their opponents and have been one of the most consistent lines throughout the league since the line was formed. All star snubbed goaltender AJ Whiffen picked up his league leading fifth shutout of the season and is now just one shutout back of tying the SJHL single season record. What an amazing feat for this rookie goaltender and I find it amazing that the other coaches around the Sherwood did not find it proper to vote him into a spot in the game. Oh well, the best way to prove Sherwood coaches like Larry Wintoneak wrong is to shutout their teams. Whiffen picked up 27 saves for the shutout while Sherwood conference all star Ryan Nieszner stopped 23 shots fired his way for the Klippers.

Game Notes: Josh Bray and Carter Selinger were out of the lineup tonight while Luke Johnson and Riley Daulby were back in. Stephen Simms played his third consecutive game at forward as he played alongside Brayden Nargang and Luke Johnson......... The Red Wings lead both Kindersley and Melville by six points for first in the Sherwood. The Klippers have one game in hand on the Wings which they will play tomorrow night while the Millionaires have two games in hand. Next weekend is really pivotal for the Red Wings as they play twice in Kindersley in three nights. (Friday and Sunday sandwiched around a game in Battlefords on Saturday)

The forward starting lineup for the all star game were invisible last night. Whiffen comes up big once again. How could Estevan end up with as many players on the allstar team as the Wings?

The allstar game is a joke and does nothing but cause hard feelings. Unfortunately it is a nice thing to throw on a resume if you want to pursue hockey after graduating from the SJHL.

I think its pretty obvious who you are and i think its time to quit being so bitter about the all star selections, your embarassing yourself.

It was nice to see another big win for the guys on home ice, something they have definately improved on from last year!

Good game Wings!
Fun to watch. Really playing as a team.
And how about this Rhett Bly!!

We have to move past the fact that AJ did not get picked up for the allstar game. We all know he belongs there and so do those who selected the team. We also know that politics plays a role in everything, especially hockey. AJ is young and he is going to have to get past this as well. He will get another chance next year. It is no good to harbour ill feelings. That will affect your game in a negative way. I am sure there are other coaches that feel the same way about other players that never made the selection. The selection is a judgement call and they had their reasons for making the selection they did. What AJ has to do is continue to play the way he has been. Keep his focus and concentration where it needs to be. On the game!! And if he continues to improve and play well, there will be big things in his future.

Good job on the win last night guys.

Nfld Fan!

Yes, way to go Bly. I think we should give Blys teamate from last year a chance. Selinger and Bly were close in points last year and of similar cast in training camp. Who knows. Keep going Wings!

neizner is no all star..whiffen is an 18 year old with five shut outs only a little over half way through the season. Does that not say something to the coaches around the league in regards as to who is an all star and who is not. I know there is alot of red wing fans disapointed whiffen didn't make it but he just has to keep playing good to prove the league they made the wrong choice..keep up the good work whiffen!!!

lol Whiffen might pass Sammartino's shutout record in a single season!
