Wings Prevail in OT!

It may not have been the most exciting game of the season at played at the Colosseum (at least the first 57 minutes or so) but the end result was all that mattered as the Weyburn Red Wings downed the visiting Melfort Mustangs 2-1 in overtime. The story of the first period was the Red Wings taking a number of penalties and the injury to Red Wings forward Riley Daulby. Daulby was the victim of a charge that went uncalled. After being down on the ice for roughly 10 minutes or so, he was removed from the ice on a stretcher. I do not know the extent of his injuries at this time but have been told he will be spending the night in the hospital. Best of luck with the recovery Riley!

Back to the game, the two teams also played a scoreless second period. Eric Calibaba was ejected for a check from behind (apparently) early in the period and then Mustangs forward John Payne was ejected for a dirty check from behind on Rhett Bly as the period expired.

Ryan Gareau put the Mustangs on the board at the 6:05 of the third period with Nick Kalnicki picking up the lone assist. It was not looking good for the Wings until a late power play was assessed after Melfort forward Taylor Watt was called for delay of game after knocking his own net off. The Wings took advantage as Rhett Bly found a wide open Preston Shupe in front of the net and he buried it past Ilia Ejov. Stephen Simms (pictured above) also assisted on the goal. The Mustangs would then get into penalty trouble early in the overtime as Riley Clark was called just 53 seconds into the extra frame for hooking. Just 15 seconds later, Josh Bray would win the draw to Torrey Lindsay who fed it back to Stephen Simms who unloaded a howitzer for the winning goal. AJ Whiffen was not overly busy as he only faced 20 shots on the evening, stopping 19 of them. Ilia Ejov stopped 28 of 30 shots he faced in the Melfort goal. With the win, the Red Wings are now six points ahead of the second place Kindersley Klippers for the time being. The Klippers are in action tomorrow night in Yorkton. The Red Wings visit the Klippers on Friday night and then again on Sunday. Those games could go a long ways to determining who wins the race for first in the Sherwood.

Elsewhere,

The Yorkton Terriers had an opportunity to move ahead of the Estevan Bruins tonight with a victory over the stuggling Battlefords North Stars. Derek Serdachny (pictured left) had a big night for the Terriers as he picked up three assists. Kevin Stringfellow scored twice for the Terriers while Bryan Hull and Kyle Block added singles. Travis Coghill, Corey Silverson, Derek Derkach and Jock Sutter all added assists. Rookie goaltender Joel Danyluk picked up the shutout as he stopped all 34 shots he faced. Ryan Kerpan took the loss as he made 22 saves.

Meanwhile, in Nipawin, the Notre Dame Hounds broke out of a slump as they downed the Hawks 2-1. Rylan Schwartz had a goal and an assist for the Hounds. Thomas Williams also scored for Notre Dame while Brendon Dault and Travis Montgemery both had assists. Mike Rey scored the lone goal for the Hawks with assists going to Colton McDonald and Jordon Miller. Mark Currie (pictured left) had a good night stopping 37 shots to lead the Hounds to victory. Daniel DiCamillo made 24 saves for the Hawks.

Tonight's Three Stars:

1. Derek Serdachny - Yorkton Terriers (4 assists)
2. Mark Currie - Notre Dame Hounds (1 goal allowed, 37 saves)
3. Stephen Simms - Weyburn Red Wings (2 points, OT winner)

That's it for tonight - as the trade deadline approaches we will keep tabs on what the Red Wings are doing and keep you up to date on all news as it is made available both for the Wings and around the SJHL.
