SJHL All Stars Released!

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League has released the names of the forty players chosen to participate in the SJHL All-Star Game, which will be played Sunday, January 20th at 2pm in Yorkton.
The hosts, Terriers, have placed three players on the squad, including the Sherwood Conference starting goaltender, Lynden Sammartino. Defensemen Michael Trebish and Jordan Pawelec will also represent Yorkton.
Joining Sammartino in the starting line-up will be defensemen Derek Edwards of Melville and Kealin Wong of the Estevan Bruins. The Kindersley dynamic trio of Jonathan Redlick (centre), Brett Leedahl (left wing), and Ryan Sawka (right wing) comprise the starting forwards.
The Klippers lead all Sherwood Conference teams with five players selected to take part in the mid-season classic. Goalie Ryan Nieszner and defenseman Scott Linnell join Redlick, Sawka, and Leedahl.
Weyburn placed four players on the roster (defenseman Kyle Haines, and forwards Brayden Nargang, Torrey Lindsay, and Preston Shupe). Joining Wong from the Estevan Bruins will be forwards Kyle Stroh, Payden Benning, and Kyle Ermel. Two forwards, Dion Campbell and Kale Dolinski, round out the Melville contingent, along with Edwards. The lone Notre Dame Hound to get selected is 1990 rookie sensation Rylan Schwartz.
The defending Credential Cup champion Humboldt Broncos will have six players on the Itech Conference All-Stars.
Goalie Taylor Nelson was the only one of them to make the starting line-up. He'll have some familiar faces playing directly in front of him as defensemen Matthew Rintoul, Tanner Vandesype, and Russ Nielsen all made the grade. Forwards Jordan Schindel and Laurent Benjamin are also headed to Yorkton.
Flin Flon's exciting forwards that consist of Reid MacLeod, Pierre-Luc Boucher, and Dennis Kubat are also going to the All-Star Game, along with defenseman Myles Masse. Former Bomber Shawn McNulty was selected to go as he'll be the lone representative for the Battlefords North Stars.
Three other teams are sending three players each. The Melfort Mustangs will be represented by goalie Ilia Ejov, defenseman Riley Clark, and forward Taylor Watt. La Ronge is sending its entire top line of Jordie Johnston, Bruno-Pier Gosselin, and Jarrid Dowhay. Nipawin Hawks' All-Stars are defenseman Blair Toms and forwards Brent Ottmann and Torrie Dyck.
The Itech starting line-up features Nelson, Toms, Masse, Johnston, Dyck, and MacLeod.
SJHL All-Stars are determined by way of a voting process by the league's head coaches with criteria that stipulate coaches being forbidden from voting for his own players. Coaches had to return ballots to the SJHL Head Office by December 21st. All SJHL teams must have, at least, one representative in the game.
The coaching staffs were determined by winning percentages. The team with the best winning percentage in the Itech Conference gets to send its staff to Yorkton, and ditto for the Sherwood Conference.
With this in mind, the Humboldt Broncos coaching fraternity of Dean Brockman, Murray Brookbank, and Tim Klimosko; as well as trainer Ramandeep Dhanjal has earned the right for the Itech Conference. The Broncos had a winning percentage of .776 as of the end of December (59-points in 38-games). Thanks to a nine game winning streak near the end of the month, that enabled Brockman's staff to beat out Melfort's Darrell Mann and Trevor Blevins, who had their Mustangs sitting at a winning percentage of .667.
The Sherwood Conference coaching staff will be comprised of the Weyburn Red Wings Head Coach in Dwight McMillan, Assistant Coach Darcy Pindus, Assistant Coach Tyler McMillan, General Manager Ron Rumball, and Trainers Tom Sanders, Don Pindus, and Edward Istace. The Wings also employ Safety Person Ward Borys.
The Red Wing staff had a winning percentage of .641 (50-points in 39-games), which narrowly beat Kindersley's coaches of Larry Wintoneak and Kevin Edgerton, who had their Klipper team playing at a .615 clip (48-points in 39-games).
The SJHL All-Star Weekend begins on Friday, January 18th with the Terriers facing off against the Melville Millionaires; followed by a Meet & Greet Terrier 35th Anniversary Social. On Saturday, January 19th there will be a Terrier Alumni Game that also features the Hanson Brothers, from the famous movie 'Slapshot'. The supper banquet headlines NHL Hall of Famer Darryl Sittler and Saskatchewan Roughrider wide receiver Matt Dominguez, who will be bringing along the Grey Cup. The actual All-Star Game goes Sunday, January 20th at 2pm at the Farrell Agencies Arena.

(Note: I will post my opinions of the all star selections at some point tonight when I have more time but to give you a preview of my opinion - AJ Whiffen was absolutely screwed over by the all star selection process)

I agree with you about Whiffen and I also think Cantlon was screwed how do you pick a 7th and 13th place goalie over a 4th and 5th place goalie???

agree, along with whiffen, bray and simms should be on the squad as well..

How do they choose the allstars? I heard the coaches have to send in five names from their team. If the coaches sent in Whiffen's name he would have been picked. Whiffen is definitely the MVP of the team. What will the Wings do if Whiffen gets hurt?

Mark my words. There is going to be hard feelings with these selections and the Red Wings better enjoy first place now because they will not be there very long.

Maybe you should read up? The coaches aren't allowed to pick from their own team.
Whiffen likely is the MVP of the team, so are alot of other goalies. What if any MVP gets hurt? Duh! What if he doesn't?
We have a good back up.
Sounds like you're a little jealous the Wings are in 1st? Pretty good for a team w/ so many 18-19 yr. olds & rookies.
Alot of times the Wings have won the league, which is many... they didn't finish 1st in their division.

You should take some reading lessons. From the previous quote "the coaches have to send in five names from their team. If the coaches sent in Whiffen's name he would have been picked." Duh.

I suppose you think that the Wings will beat Humboldt. What is the record between Humboldt and the Wings this year?

It is a shame when someone has to adjust the game sheets to favor certain players. Too bad they never thought of the effect it has on the players that are being screwed over. I always thought that the best teams were the teams that treated ALL players fairly. Oh well, noone said everything in life would be fair.

Junior A All-star games tend to be games for 20 and 19 yr olds (a lot of which are determined by all of the coaches in the league). There is no doubt that Whiffen is a high calibre SJHL goalie - rightly or wrongly he was not chosen due to being an 89 birthday.

I have absolutely no affection for the Terriers, but Sammartino is a very good goalie on a weaker team. He is the reason why they stay in the mix in most games

From the SJHL website on how players are chosen for the all star game..
SJHL all stars are determined by way of a voting process by the league's head coaches, with criteria that stipulate coaches being forbidden from voting for his own players... :)
Hmm, Now you have Weyburn against Humboldt.. Which has a good posibility of happening, Yes i am well aware of their record this yr.
But the playoffs are a whole different story. Would be a tight series Humboldt is good. Guess we'll see what happens.

Read slowly. The coaches must send in THEIR picks of players eligible for other teams to vote on.

Did the coaches send in Whiffen, Bray, and Simms names so they could be voted on by other teams coaches? :)

If they can only pick 5, why does Humboldt have 6 on the team?
Weyburn has 4, who was the 5th players name they sent in? Maybe it was Whiffen, Bray, or Simms :)

Those three players where ripped. All three are leaders in the conference in stats some named to the team don't come close. These three should be on a mission in this half of the season to prove alot of people wrong.

"how do you pick a 7th and 13th place goalie over a 4th and 5th place goalie???"

easy, if the 7th and 13th are better, you pick them. goalies are tricky to evaluate. their stats only give a general indication of how good they are. a goaltender can be amazing, but if he plays on a terrible team, his stats can take a serious dip. however, an average goaltender can look outstanding statistically if he plays on a strong team, or even a team thats just good enough to take away all the shots from in close and let the goalie see mostly perimeter shots. in regards to sammartino, i've only seen him play once in the sj, but even if he was terrible, holding the league shutout record pretty much guarantees you a spot in any league all star game.

I can understand what you are saying but how do Nelson and Ejov get picked when thay have seen so few shots?? Nelson GP 26 shots 663 Ejov GP 23 606 that is why their stats are so good, yet it seems that their stats are what made them stand out. I guess all of these shots must be scoring chances??? I do have another question why do they not pick 3 goalies one for each period???

i cant comment too much on which goalies were and werent picked, i was just commenting on how goaltenders are looked at in general. i dont often get to see sj games so i havent seen enough of the goaltenders play. all i get is hearsay from a couple people i know who do see the games.
3 goaltenders would be convenient as far as having one for each period, but in a league the size of the sj, thats half of the starting goaltenders in the league, which i think is a bit much. however, from what i have heard, the field of goaltenders is pretty strong in the sj this year, so its too bad for those that got left out.

you dont know anyhting about goaltending....look how many shots whiffen faces compared to nelson and ejov....and he still has a better save percentage....and he is younger...it is not fair how he got ripped off because of his age...

The All Star selection process is not workings like many others. When you have a goaltender post the stats Whiffen has, it should have nothing to do with being a rookie. He is first in his division and in save percentage. What have you go to do to make this team? I'm sure he was disappointed as he workied hard to get where he is.I know there are more disappointed players but its done put it past you and focus on what's ahead. Prove them wrong!

all I have to say is that the all star game is a way for some of the players to showcase their talents.....the real all stars come out during the play offs.

Exactly right!

"....look how many shots whiffen faces compared to nelson and ejov....and he still has a better save percentage....and he is younger"

i havent looked at the shots, this is why i said i can't really comment on which goalies were picked. i was just commenting that stats aren't a tell all, and all you are doing is spitting back a couple stats. also...what does him being younger have to do with it? ok so he's younger....that doesnt make him a better goaltender. it just means he has more time to develop into a better one. it shouldnt factor into the all star decision. now, older goaltenders, i can see how some people would decide to give them one last kick at the can. that happens, right or wrong i dont know, but i can see the point of view.

Maybe Whiffen should have made it maybe not, The two goalies from the south and him are all pretty dece and probably the fact that he is a little younger and can make it a different year had something to do with it, it happens every year so dont think this is the first time pal, i think its kinda nice they give everyone a chance. And as far as the guy who is hinting that Whiffen is better then Nelson or Ejov, ur wrong pal. Anyone playin in this league will tell ya those two are by far the best. Just a guess but im gonna say the North cleans up hard in the actual game as long as its not a joke and all the players actually put in a decent effort.

Nelson & Ejov "By Far" the best??
LOL, thats funny!

Anonymous said...

I will agree with 1 comment in here.
The real "All Stars" come out during the playoffs...

i agree with nelson and ejov being the two best tenders in the league, whiffen is good for a rookie but those two are better. and yes the norths team does appear to be stronger.
