Wings Lose Due to Controversial Call!

Although the Red Wings should have had the two points and a 2-1 victory, they will have to settle for one point and a 2-1 shootout loss to the Notre Dame Hounds on Friday night at the Colosseum. It appeared that Scott Doody had scored the go ahead goal for the Red Wings in the third period after a Shawn Courtney shot got through Hounds goaltender Mark Currie and bounced in off the shin pad of Scott Doody. Referee Sean Dufour actually signalled a goal before calling his linseman over to confer. Linseman Derek Nernberg told the referee that it was a kicking motion so the goal was disallowed by Dufour much to the dismay of the home crowd and head coach Dwight McMillan. McMillan received a gross misconduct from referee Dufour at the conclusion of the shootout after some water bottles found the Colosseum ice. Although I am sure Laury Ryan will discipline the Red Wings for the incident, when will the SJHL step up to the plate and discipline officials for poor outings much like the WHL as done in the last couple of seasons in incidents involving officials such as referee Adam Byblow and linseman Kelly Balaberda.

Back to the game..... Rhett Bly picked up his 14th goal of the season before being ejected in the second period for checking from behind. Josh Bray and Stephen Simms assisted on the goal. Kyle Ireland scored for the Hounds to start off the scoring in the game from Marc-Andre Nadeau and Rylan Schwartz. The team's would remain scoreless until Tommy Williams notched the shootout winner for the Hounds, the only goal scored in the shootout as he was the fourth Hounds shooter. Mark Currie picked up the win for the Hounds as he had a solid night stopping 33 of 34 shots and then all 4 shots he faced in the shootout. AJ Whiffen made 26 saves on 27 Notre Dame shots. The Red Wings are now off until Tuesday when they will host the Battlefords North Stars. The entire Red Wings coaching and support staff along with defenseman Kyle Haines and forwards Preston Shupe, Torrey Lindsay and Brayden Nargang are off to Yorkton for the weekend as they will participate in the SJHL all star game. AJ Whiffen should be joining them but enough said about that.

Elsewhere....

Ryan Sawka had a goal and three assists has he continues his climb up the SJHL's scoring leaders list as the Kindersley Klippers doubled up the Estevan Bruins 4-2 in Kindersley. Brett Leedahl added a goal and two assists while Jonathan Redlick had a goal and an assist for the Klippers. Kirk Pearce had the other Kindersley goal. Niko Grose and Payden Benning scored for the Bruins. Matt Weninger appears to be taking over for Ryan Nieszner as of late as he made 28 saves for the win. Karsten Felske stopped 33 Kindersley shots at the other end. The Klippers are now six points back of the Red Wings in the battle for first in the Sherwood.

All star weekend officially kicked off in Yorkton as the Terriers played host to the arch-rival Melville Millionaires but the Mils came out on top with a 4-2 win. Scott Hennings scored twice to lead the way for Melville while Chris Shudo and Aaron Decorby added singles. Daniel Hope added two assists for the Millionaires. Derek Serdachny scored both Yorkton goals. Bryan Hull added two assists for the Terriers. Travis Bosch, who will get a bulk of the work down the stretch due to an injury to Kyle Cantlon, made 30 saves for the win. Lynden Sammartino had a rough outing allowing 4 goals on only 14 shots in just over 30 minutes of play. Joel Danyluk came in to the game after that stopping all 10 shots he faced.

It was Taylor Thiessen night in Nipawin as the Hawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period in large part due to Thiessen who had a goal and three assists in the first frame. Keldon Sanderson, Dean Prpick, Matt Schneider and Brent Ottmann also scored for Nipawin. Ottmann, Trent Rumpel, Cody Wutzke, Steve Mason, Jordon Miller and Blair Toms all added assists for Nipawin. Ricky Cey spoiled the shutout bid for Derek Kleinsteuber as he scored a short-handed goal late in the third period. Kleinsteuber would end up with 33 saves on the night for the win. The Hawks fired 50 shots at the Stars goaltenders, including 23 at Ryan Kerpan in the first period. Kerpan was pulled after allowing four goals on the 23 shots. Adrien Lemay went the rest of the way stopping 26 of 27 shots in 40 minutes of work.

And finally it was a battle in Flin Flon as the Bombers welcomed the Humboldt Broncos to town. The Broncos managed to score five goals on a measly 14 shots as they won 5-3. Jordan Schindel scored twice and added an assist to pace the Broncos. Brady Wacker added a goal and an assist while goals also went to Shawn Hunter and Edward Gale. Matthew Rintoul had three assists for the Broncos. Reid MacLeod and Dennis Kubat each had a goal and an assist to lead the Bombers. Cole Wilson had the other Flin Flon marker. All star Myles Masse added two assists for the Bombers. Taylor Nelson picked up the win for Humboldt as he made 23 saves. Carsen Chubak allowed three goals on only 8 shots in just over a period of play. Calvin Bartel would allow 2 goals in six shots over the remaining two periods as the Bombers did keep the Broncos shots at a very low total.

Tonights SJHL Three Stars:

1. Taylor Thiessen - Nipawin Hawks (4 point night)
2. Ryan Sawka - Kindersley Klippers ( goal and three assists for Klippers leading scorer.
3. Jordan Schindel - Humboldt Broncos (Broncos leading scorer had three point night and a fight to boot)

Au contrare Brad, the Wings did not play well enough to win that game. They did score the most goals, but it should not have been close enough that the ref could screw us like that. This was the last place team in our division and we came out like it didn't matter at all. I do wonder, though, whether the refs have orders from above(Laury Ryan) or if they just take it upon themselves. It seems to me that it's too much of a coincidence when it's every game and every ref/linesman seems to be against us!

I have been a regular to your site since it began because of the quality media information that you deliver. You have changed the site to have only comments from registered individuals due to 'inappropriate comments' by bloggers.

It is for this reason I am quite disappointed in your reference to "Dufus". Apparently only you are allowed to express your opinions in an inappropriate way.

I have seen my fair share of terrible calls this year and you may very well be right in your assessment of the call. However, I actually expected better from this site.

In all fairness to Brad, we have always allowed comments to be posted, be it either good or bad towards the game.

We only allow registered users to post now due to the posts that were belittling players/family members of the Weyburn Red Wings.

This way we can now moderate comments and it eliminates the majority of trouble makers who leave comments.

Comments were getting posted and people were getting upset and would contact the Red Wings who in turn contacted us.

I will admit that the choice of words is probably inappropriate and I have edited. I appreciate that you all enjoy coming here.

I have worked on this site with Troy because I believe in getting the information out to the fans who cannot be at the game. One thing many people have to remember is that the blog is my opinion and no one else's. The readers may or may not share my opinion and that is why I invite comments. Anyone can leave comments, I just ask they do as I and post there name or at the very least a handle to it. You find my comments inappropriate - that is fine - but remember I did not post anonymously like most of the other people were before we made the change.

You have a disclaimer right at the top of the blog saying that these are your views - you should be able to say whatever you wish...so sj fan - this is a blog and really not a website affiliated with the team or sj - so if you don't like the opinions don't come here

I have to ask, what about the goal judges? Are they just there for something to do? Does the league require that we have goal judges? What purpose do they have, if not consulted? In a case like this, why was the goal judge not asked? The ref signnalled that it was a goal, the linesmen stated that it was kicked in, the goal judge (who has the best view of the nets), well he was not asked. How come? I realize that the ref's and linesmen cannot see everything that happens on the ice, after all they are only human, but is that not what we have goal judges for. Whether it would have remained a goal or not, who knows, but maybe when making a decission they should confer with the judge from behind that net. It may save some frustrations on the part of all involved,(teams, coaches, ref's).
Just a thought as I am not sure what we have goal judges for if they are not consulted on controversial stuff like this.
