Whiffen Ties SJHL Single Season Shutout Record as Wings Bomb Flin Flon!

The Weyburn Red Wings returned to the ice tonight as they welcomed the Flin Flon Bombers to town and the Wings were certainly not gracious hosts as they shutdown the high-powered Bombers offense 5-0. Rookie goaltender AJ Whiffen turned aside 34 Flin Flon shots as he recorded career shutout number six which tied a SJHL single season record shared by a few goaltenders including former Red Wing Terry Denike. With 10 games to play in the regular season it is conceivable that Whiffen could set the single season record this season.
It was a solid effort all around for the Wings as they have outscored their opponents 12-0 in the last two games. Erick Ruud had a big game for the Wings as he scored two first period goals to lead the team to victory. His linemates Scott Doody and Eric Calibaba assisted on both goals. Josh Bray picked up the old Gordie Howe hat trick as he had a goal, assist and a fighting major after battling Bombers star forward Dennis Kubat with just two seconds to play in the second period. Rhett Bly and Torrey Lindsay also scored for the Red Wings. Preston Shupe added two assists for the Wings who got single helpers from Stephen Simms, Kyle Haines and Adam Feniak. Justin Crockatt continues to endear himself to the Red Wing faithful as he had a spirited fight with the Bombers Cameron MacKinnon before almost getting in a scrap with Harley Garrioch which the linseman restrainted before they could dance at center ice. The Wings fired 32 shots at Bombers goaltender Carsen Chubak with Chubak stopping 27 of them. 977 fans went home happy as the Red Wings are now seven points up on second place Kindersley.
