Wings send the Wolves home whimpering

The Weyburn Red Wings forced their way back into first place in the Sherwood last night with a win over the La Ronge Ice Wolves by a score of 3-2.

La Ronge grabbed the early lead at 4:38 into the first on a goal from Bruno-Pier Gosselin but then Riley Daulby scored his first as a Red Wing late in the period to tie the game at one heading into the second.

The offence for both teams weren’t getting too many shots at the net as Whiffen faced four shots and Jobin had nine directed his way in the first.

The second period was much like the first as La Ronge got an early goal by Chris Jungwirth. This time though the Wings couldn’t capitalize on some chances and headed to the dressing room down by one after the second period.

The Wings had to pick up their play in the third if they hoped to go into the break in first place. It looked as if they might have got some jump into their step after Dwight screamed at them to get things going. The Wings got an opportunity when they were shorthanded as a La Ronge player went down in the offensive end as he was hit by the puck. With the extra man taken out of the frame Rhett Bly flew up the ice with the puck one on one versus Jobin and was stopped on his first try but continued to work hard and scored after a few extra chances in front of the net to tie the game at two.

The final goal of the night was scored by Torrey Lindsay who planted himself right on the doorstep to bang the puck past Jobin for the win. I didn’t have a chance to see the goal as I was at the other end of the arena but the crowd was pumped and it was great too hear as the boys held on for the win.

AJ Whiffen picked up the win in net on a relatively slow night for him (compared to many other nights) as he faced 18 shots. Jonathan Jobin took the loss for the Ice Wolves as he made 21 saves on 24 shots.

Now let’s just cheer on Notre Dame tonight as the face Kindersley, so we can hold on to first place in the Sherwood during the Christmas Break.

Hopefully all of the players come back after Xmas. It sounds like Lazar and Gardner are not the only unhappy players in Wings land.

Is it just me or does Doody's play seem to be falling off as the season goes on. He needs to get some kahunas for Xmas. He has been given more than enough chances to show his worth. It is a man's game and you have to go to the tough spots to score goals.

We could use another scorer to play with Shupe and Lindsay (preferably someone willing to stand in front of the net on the pp) There was not one screen on the pp all night. Maybe we can move Doody for this type of player.

My comment:

If you don't like it here don't come back. Junior hockey is a privilege not a right. Quit stirring the pot.

I am happy the wings pulled out a win before the break- thanks to Bly for changing the tone of the game with extra effort. However, a loss would have brought on some soul searching that could be more benificial to the team identity for the long haul ahead. I noticed that LR and HUM both rolled four lines and we say we do but we really don't. We had our butts kicked by Hum , but we still had our 35 point "studs" Bray and Nargang out there with their fourth line. Bray is scared to hit and be hit as shown against LR-three times he turned the puck over to avoid contact. Talented but no heart, also way to cool.Same with Nargang coasting back to our zone on a powerplay in the second. What is going on?We need more players like Schupe, Lindsay, Johnson,Doody,Bly to carry the team with theier energy and work ethic when things get tough not JandB and the 19 year old slow moving clones. I thought hockey was about skating yet we see Nick and Connor and Bray on a power playagainst LR.
What is that ! Thankfully we did'nt get scored on. Also it is mid season and our D are still making shakey passes to leave our zone. I love our team but I am concerned and I agree with the coment that our fans could cheer more and get behind our team esp. when we fall behind a goal or two. Go Wings!!
