Double OT victory sends the Klippers to the Sherwood Finals!

I am sure everyone already knows by now but it’s my job to put it up on here. The Kindersley Klippers finished off our Weyburn Red Wings by a score of 3-2 in double overtime last night.

Despite firing over 50 shots on Klippers goalie Matt Weninger the Red Wings just couldn’t get one past the netminder in the extra periods. Kindersley rewarded their goaltender for a fantastic performance at 5:29 of double OT when Jonathan Redlick scored on the powerplay to end the game and the series.

The Kindersley Klippers now move on to face the Melville Millionaires in the Sherwood Conference Finals while Weyburn prepare for their year end banquet which will be scheduled at a later date.

On tonight’s SJHL schedule is two games. Nipawin will try to stay alive versus Humboldt who have a 3-1 series lead and the Flin Flon Bombers look to take out the Melfort Mustangs who are also down 3-1.

I am sure people will be busy looking back on what the boys did or didn’t do right, but for now let’s just give them a great big thanks for one heck of a season!

Good job boys, I know we didn’t want it to end this early but that’s how it goes sometimes.

Just wanted to say to all the Weyburn Redwings......Great Effort!
It was a "nail biter" of a game! Thank you for such an exciting season! So sad to see you all go!

Also I would just like to say thank you to Kevin Smith, for bringing the games to our homes throughout the season. You do a great job!

And Yes Brad, with the time difference, it was 2:00 am back here in Newfoundland!

Im really disappointed the Red Wings lost. I thought they might go all the way this year! I never got to see one playoff game either. I figured i would wait till the league final or maybe the confrence final cause i thought they would make it at least that far. What a disappointment. Hopefully we pick up some playoff performers for next year.

maybe if some of you idiots didn't wait till the league final to come to a game, we would actually make it that far with that extra support. you people drive me nuts.

WOW! do i agree with the last post! way to go!!!!at least somebody said it!!

I agree with the above 2 posters... Unfortunatly, it seems we have a lot of people in Weyburn who are like that.

But that last game had a really nice turnout. They didn't announce the attendance, or put it on the internet, but I'm guessing it was around the 850 mark, which was alright considering the fact we only had 600 the two previous games. The Colosseum finally had that "playoff atmosphere"!

See you all next season!

Congratulations Wings on an exciting season, I feel we will be a Big contender next yr. We weren't supposed to do too much this yr. & We won the Sherwood Pennant. Hopefully we an get all the guys back. Congrats to all the vetrans leaving this yr. You provided alot of excitement in your years here, months, however long. Good job boys!!!!

Why am i an idiot for expecting the sherwood confrence pennant winners to at least make it to the second round?! If they want my support and bigger crowds maybe the boys should win more then 1 game in the playoffs!

your an idiot because there were no fans to cheer these guys on until the game of friday night, they thrive on noise and the fans and there was none. thats why! and just because they made first place doesnt always mean anything, people can't win all there games..

Thank You to the Weyburn Redwings for a great season. Don't be disappointed you gave the fans a great season and for all of us fans here in Newfoundland, We never missed a game and supported you all the way. To the players who are leaving, take the good memories and friendships that you made with you, good luck in your future endevors. Thanks Kevin, for bringing the games to us, they were so exciting. Looking forward to next season already.

I wanted to tell Brad it was 2:06am here but someone beat me to it.

You are a bandwagonjumper, not a real red wing fan.
& maybe you're not an idiot, you just don't understand hockey..

The game is over and done, you can keep arguing all you want, no one feels as bad as the boys do. I guess you didn't see them after the last game. Nothing will change the outcome. And no, im not an idiot just a parent!

Well I guess even a big crowd couldn't get them to win. Seems odd that they would do well during reg. season but not one win in selection series and only 1 in playoffs before being eliminated. Any guesses as to why? They traded off young talent to make a run but didn't get very far. You can't blame fans for questioning that.

The main point is without fan support the Wings won't be around for many more seasons, regular or playoff. The corporate sponsorship came to the aid of the club once again this year, but fan support was not to the level it should be. Thanks go to the season ticket holders and fans that attend on a regular basis, they contribute the funds to operate, and recruit players needed to get that long playoff run. If you want to show your support go to the team awards night on Thursday, and get your season tickets for next year now.

Kinda as a little hobby, I have kept track of the past 2 Red Wing regular seasons attendance, and will continue to do so, just for the sake of seeing how the crowds differ. It dropped this year by quite a bit, and we were IN FIRST PLACE. Shouldn't it go up?

But lets face it, our team probably wasnt a first place team, third is where we finished in playoffs and thats probably where we should have been. We overachieved in the regular season and our true colors came out in the playoffs. To tell u the truth, i didnt really expect us to make it past Kindersley.

I disagree, i don't think we over achieved in the regular season, it would have been different if we just got away with 1st by a point or 2 but i think we were 10 or more pts. ahead of Melville & 2nd in the SJHL?
I knew either Kindersley or Melville would be a tough series, But i thought we had a good chance at the Sherwood championship, Tight playoff series are all about breaks & bounces, & this yr. we sure were'nt getting many.
My real worry if we did win the Sherwood was Humboldt.
They are a definate powerhouse this yr. & use 4 lines that usually are all consistently producing.
I don't think the Broncos will have any trouble w/ Flin Flon, with the winner of the Sherwood,
or making it to the RBC.

And i disagree with you. The Broncos are in my opinion the most overrated team to ever play in the SJ. Im tired of reading the paper and checking the website and hearing how great they are. I watched them play here at the coliseum on Dec. 16. Everyone probably saw the score of 7-1 in favor of the Broncos and figured they were the better team this night. This was not the case. The Wings took it to them for 60 minutes. Humboldt somehow just burried the few chances they had and altho i am Whiffens biggest fan he had a terrible game. I could have saved some of those goals with a fly swatter. The bottom line is that the broncos arent that good, just lucky. If the wings played their best game of the season versus the broncos best game of the season, I guarantee it would be a score similiar to Dec. 16, but in favor of our boys.

I think the problem was that whiffen was fatigued. they gave him the starting role at 18 and he deserved it. He was hands down the best goalie in the league. My question is why didnt the Wings bring in a more capable back up to take some of the load off of Whiffen.

Anonymous said...

Is that why we lost to them every game this yr. They were just lucky? Overated? They are a veteran team with alot of depth.
Don't forget they only lost 9 games all year.
We'll see what happens in the next 2-3 weeks...

Anonymous said...

Are you suggesting that you dont think our wings are a better team then the Broncos? I watched both games they played in Weyburn and altho we lost them both, we were the better team.

I really started to laugh at the comments of one blogger who states "the broncos arent that good, just lucky". I guess in the 48 wins they were lucky and in the 9 losses this year they just didn't get that fortunate bounce!! Would I like to see an underdog team take the Broncos? Sure... it makes for a good story - do I think it will happen? I think the chances are slim, not impossible, but slim at best.

Yes that i was i was trying to say, But i guess he thinks its been all luck for the Broncos this yr.
& when they beat the wings 7-1 their last trip here, he still thinks the wings outplayed them.
hmmmm
