Terriers finally take a bite out of the Red Wings

The Wings fought back to tie the game up in the third period after the Terriers scored three goals in the second, but it still wasn't enough as the Terriers picked up their first win over the Red Wings in five tries this season.

Preston Shupe opened the scoring in the first period with the assists going to Krukowski and Lindsay while the Terriers countered with three goals in the second from Greg Coburn, Evan Neibrandt and Kyle Block.

The third period really showed what the Red Wings were made of as Torrey Lindsay scored early in the period to give the Wings a chance. Then it was time for some late game heroics as the Red Wings were a man down with under a minute to go but still managed to get a goal from Scott Doody to tie it up and send it to overtime.

Kyle Block scored the winning goal in the shootout as Torrey Lindsay couldn't put his chance past Lynden Sammartino who made 35 saves on 38 shots during the night (20 of those coming in the first period). Weyburn's AJ Whiffen made 32 saves on 35 shots during the night.

I must be the first one out of bed this morning to start my comments and no I'm not from NFLD either.
Just had a little time on my hands to look up some stats.
No we arent the lowest PP percentage team in the league but we are second behind no other than the Battleford Stars who are a pathetic Junior "A" hockey team. They are at 9% and we are at 13% the next worst is Estevan at 14%
The leagues best teams have good PP players if not two lines of PP players and have averages of approx.20-21% with the exception of Humboldt who has a 25% PP Goal percentage.
But as well the Wings also have the 3rd worst PK percentage in the league at 80.5% only better than Battleford @72% and Nipawin @ 75%.
The best teams in the league average 87% PK percentages.
I like the players we have, but if they can't learn to move the puck on the power play or force a opponent on the PK then we need to make some moves sooner or later.
I don't beleive anyone in this league has successfully ever built for next year, it's all about this year. We can rebuild next year the same as everyone else.
Thre are players out there that lower teams will trade that are proven PP and PK players lets get some now and not wait till January 10th like we always seem to do and then making trades get much tougher.
There is no question our PP has not been very good for the past few years until Bordeleau came along with a big shot.
ND and Humboldt pass the puck around non stop and seem to get good results.
We don't even get a shot some powerplays.

I think I've made my point.

It makes one wonder what's happening to our PP when we have a 4 minute PP with hardly a shot on net. There should be no more than two passes and a shot on net. We look for that pretty play instead of shooting and getting some ugly goals. I'm sure that the coaching staff are telling the boys to shoot the puck but it sure doesn't look like it. If the boys aren't shooting then maybe the personal on the point and up front need to be changed or find some other players in the league through trades who will. I can't believe that we can leave a defenceman on the ice for the whole PP whether it be two min or four min and expect him to play 40 min a game besides and not affect his whole game. The passes that are made are soft whether they are in our end or there's. I feel that this team has alot of chemistry but in order to get this PP going we may have to trade one or two players. So do it and do it now.

This team needs a proven scorer up front if you look a the d man stats Simms and Haines are in the top of the leauge in points they must be doing something right

Yeah, but Haines & Simms aren't the only d-men on the team. I believe the Wings coaching staff has rookie/vet vision. Nothing against the vets - we have some good players but I don't think the rookies are being used effectively. Rhett Bly has proven himself time and again, and sits out every other game. Gardner on defense has proven he is strong and can move the puck when he gets decent minutes on the ice. But its tough for the guys to gain any confidence when they only play 5 or 6 shifts a game. Therein lies the problem. How do you expect to win any games when you only play 4 d-men for basically the whole game.

I listened to the game the other night and it appeared that Weyburn overall outplayed the Terriers. Once again, and reiterating what others are saying, the Wings PP needs some work. The Terriers scored 3 PP goals the other night and that is the only reason they won. Even with the great goaltending they had. Their PP is effective. Ours is not. I still beleive with some work it will come together and when it does Weyburn will be contenders. I would even bet they will make it to the finals "If they get their PP on track."
