Happy Birthday AJ! Wings Halt Mustangs Streak!

AJ Whiffen, with his sister in the stands for support, knows how to celebrate a birthday. Whiffen, who turned just 18 tonight, made 28 saves for his fourth shutout of the season as the Wings blanked the Melfort Mustangs 2-0 at the Colosseum. This was the first time in 17 games that the Mustangs failed to get a single point. The two teams played a scoreless first period. The Wings went up 1-0 at the 12:34 mark up the second period after a goal mouth scramble in front of Melfort goaltender Ilia Ejov. Torrey Lindsay managed to bang the puck past Ejov to give the Wings the only goal they would need. Michael Seib and Preston Shupe assisted on the goal. Brayden Nargang added his 13th of the season into an empty net with 7 seconds to go to seal the victory. Ejov was equally impressive in the Mustangs goal as he stopped 26 of 27 shots. It was definitely one of the best efforts of the season by the boys in red and white and they were rewarded with a hard earned 2 points. The Wings are now 4 points up on the second place Melville Millionaires in the Sherwood and only one point behind Melfort for first overall in the SJHL standings. The Mustangs remain two points up on the Humboldt Broncos for first in the Itech.

Funny how Samartino has 9(?) shut outs in 3 seasons, while Whiffen already has 4 in 1 season. Whiffen might break Samartino's shutout record before the end of his first season, haha.
