At least we got some awards!

Wow, it was a rough night for the Weyburn Red Wings. On a night where numerous players and coach McMillan were awarded for their hard work during the regular season the Melville Millionaires took it to the Red Wings by beating them 6-0.

The game was close after the first period. The Millionaires grabbed a 1-0 lead on the powerplay. at 8:12, Jordan Wilson fired one from the point through a screened Whiffen to give them the early lead.

Things then opened up in the second period when the Millionaires scored two more goals in the period to make it 3-0. The Red Wings did put up 13 shots compared to their 5 shots in the first period, they just weren't burying their chances.

Finally the third period got underway and this is where things got interesting,,,, very interesting. Bryant Dyke opened things up at only 1:50 into the third with a shorthanded goal, unfortunately they weren't done. The Millionaires fired home two more goals before all hell broke loose. at 16:19 both teams got into things and let the fists fly. A Brawl broke out on the ice with Courtney(Weyburn) and Beech(Melville) leaving the bench to get into things. I will leave it at that because it looks like the Red Wings have some things to work out if they want to get back on track, and this is something they do not need right now!

I am wondering if the wings are taking things for granted because this is the selection series and they are garuanteed a spot in the second round. This is supposed to be the Playoffs. Last night's game was rediculous. During the regular season the Wings were a third period team. This is not going to happen for them in the playoffs. They are going to have to play 60 minutes of hockey. They are just going to have to dig deep and figure out which is more important; winning the fight or winning the game. Sometimes you have to walk away. The playoffs is one of those times. And stop with the cheap penalties. I do not believe the wings can secure 1st place now but "They still have what it takes to win the championship." There is a lot of good talent on this team and it is disappointing when they don't bring that talent with them. I want to see the team that was on the ice as we approached the end of the regular season.

dido..there are obviously problems. It's time to get down the business of winning hockey games, and playing as a team. There has been way too much media fluff, way too much attention to being Number 1, and promoting certain players, while ignoring others. Although nice for those who are being made media superstars, it doesn't make your team play as a team. There is division among the boys on and off the ice, that is clear. They will be out if they don't leave their egos at the door and learn to play good hockey as a team.

What is this media fluff you talk about? Just curious.

How do you know there is divison among the boys. Leave your name if your stating comments like that. The boys clearly showed they are a tight nit group when they all sticked together during that line brawl.

yeah how could you know there is division among the team, unless you have some strong evidence of this don't try to stir the pot. you are either jealous, ignorant, or just seeking turmoil. which one?

Media Fluff? Promoting certain players? Ignoring others? I dont think this is true. The players are a very tight team and because they have a couple of bads games dont mean they are divided. Congrats to the players who received awards. Those players couldn't have done it without the support of their team mates. It takes a whole team and 60 min of hockey to win a game. They are all winners! Lets show them what you can do! Go Wings Go!

I apologize if my term "media fluff" ruffled everyone's feathers. I was not intending to insult anyone. In fact, I enjoy the Blog, and the chance to read other's opinions. My point is that hockey is a big head game. Sometimes the awards thing, the prestige of being #1, and singling some out, which I also didn't say was not deserving, distracts from the game, and the focus of the players just when they need it the most. As far as the division goes, this is just one person's opinion. As the first person stated, fights don't win games, focused hockey and teamwork does.
Thanks for the opportunity to speak....and thanks for the lively discussion everyone.

That sounds better. Maybe they should do it after the game so it dont distract players. I do think it should be done in front of the fans and presented properly but not after the first period or before the game, you need to stay focused on the game.

Wow, these comments are much better, just a nice healthy discussion not bashing. Maybe this will work.

I think alot of people are getting down on the team a little too early here. I'll be worried if they end up down 3-0 in their next series, but i can't see that happening either. I've watched Dwight & the Wings in alot of playoff games through the yrs.
I can't say i'm worried at all.
I know their capable of winning the league, If they play hard they have a very good chance.
Go Wings!

Yah I think it is wayyy to early to get on the boys right now.

This is my first time being a part of this whole selection series nonsense. I don't like it but I do understand it for the economical reasons.

The next series is what really matters. With the series possibly wrapping up tonight it might do some good for the Red Wings. They will be able to nurse their injuries and take some time to regroup.

I can't wait for the next round!

Question?

Just curious, i'm not sure i understand everything about this selection series, I heard whoever wins between Melville & Kindersley in the next game wins the selection series, so does Weyburn play the remainder of their games after that or are we done until the next round?

If either team wins than the series is over and then the Wings don't have to take on Melville again this weekend.

Here is a link on the La Ronge site that explains it.

re media fluff at least some has balls it seem only about 10 players got the press where the rest of the mucker which usually end up playing defence against the other team s top line never got any press

Exactly Brad, Weyburn loses 2 games, & people start to worry about who is getting more media attention...lol
If Weyburn would have won the first 2... would have been a whole different blog.
C'mon fans, stick with your team through thick & thin if you are real fans..
